South Korea's market canola oil was exposed using a genetically modified raw material labeling system
According to the Yonhap News Agency, March 10, People's Daily News reported that canola oil contains a large amount of unsaturated fatty acids that are beneficial to the human body. This, coupled with reasonable prices, is popular with Korean consumers. Recently, however, Korean imports of canola oil have been exposed using genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. Consumers question the Korean GMO labeling system.
Korean canola oil is mostly produced using genetically modified raw materials
According to the Yonhap News Agency, in 2013, the market for Korean household canola oil reached 119.9 billion won (approximately RMB 690 million), accounting for 35% of the domestic edible oil market. South Korea supplies canola oil in three ways: imported canola seeds, which are sold after being squeezed in Korea; imported canola oil, processed and repacked; and directly imported and sold finished canola oil. Canola oil and canola seeds are mainly imported from Canada and Australia. According to statistics from the Korean Center for Biosafety Information, in 2013, Korea imported 33,000 tons of canola seeds. More than half of these are Canadian production. Canada is a large canola country, and more than 70% of the farmland where GMOs are planted is canola, and 85% of canola oil produced with these canola is exported abroad. A relevant person in charge of a consumer-related organization in South Korea stated that it can be said that most of the canola oil sold in Korea uses transgenic canola.
South Korean genetically modified identification system has many loopholes that need to be improved
Yonhap News Agency said that consumers are increasingly concerned about the safety of genetically modified foods, but South Korea's domestic genetically modified labeling system is full of loopholes and it is virtually useless. The Korean government only requires 7 of the 18 genetically modified crops to be labeled as genetically modified. If the proportion of the genetically modified raw materials of the products used in the raw materials used is not in the top five or the content is less than 3%, it may not be indicated. If no genetically modified DNA or protein is detected in the finished product, the genetically modified raw material may not be marked even if it is used. Canola oil and other edible oils undergo squeezing and other processing techniques during the production process. The final finished product cannot be detected with genetically modified DNA or protein. Therefore, the use of genetically modified raw materials is not indicated.
It is reported that Korea has implemented a genetically modified marking system since 2001, allowing the development of genetically modified crops, but it has not been commercialized.
