A range of new high temperature glass reinforced PA66 compounds can compensate for the price/performance gap between standard high temperature polyamides and costly specialty polymers, providing injection molding manufacturers with a more economical alternative to automotive and other metals. The Creamid 240H7.5 series of compounds provides the strength and hardness of high glass filled engineering polymers and maintains a high level of critical mechanical properties even at temperatures up to 240 °C. Currently, this series of compounds offers a variety of grades of 35%, 50% or 60% glass, respectively, which is significantly improved in performance retention compared to similar glass-filled standard PA66 compounds (see figure). At the same time, their cost per kilogram is about 30% lower than high performance polymers such as polyphthalamide (PPA) or PA4.6, while still providing comparable performance.
Hartmut Elsässer, Global Technical Director of Engineering Thermoplastics, said: "The use of Cruamid 240H7.5 compounds allows for additional cost savings during processing. TeknorApex recommends the use of Creamin 240H7.5 compounds in automotive engine compartment components such as charge air cooler end caps, intake manifolds, quick-fit joints, radiator end tanks, turbine ducts and resonators, oil pump wheels, EGR valve and constant temperature housing. Other possible applications include electronic connectors, diode holders and bobbins, as well as consumer products such as lamp holders and connectors.
