As the saying goes, "it is a poison for three drugs." Many sleep-impaired people take sleeping pills to promote sleep quality, which is actually harmful to their health.
According to a report from the US Food Consumers website on January 16, a new study by US researchers found that adults taking sleeping pills can cause a decline in thinking and balance, and they are more likely to fall.
The study was initiated by the University of Colorado, Boulder. The researchers used 25 healthy adults to take hypnotic and sleep-inducing medications. After they awake, they were allowed to take a “walk-in†approach. For the study, the subjects were allowed to stand on a 5-meter-long, 0.2-meter-wide beam, placing one foot in front of the other, and the distance was probably a step for a normal person.
The results showed that 58% of the elderly and 27% of young people still may lose their balance within 2 hours after awakening. The researchers also found that people who were taking zolpidem, a sleeping pill, prolonged their lethargy within two hours of awakening, leaving him temporarily in a state where he had lost working memory. In addition, young people taking placebo suffer more severe cognitive impairment due to sleep inertia than older people.
Professor Wright Kenneth, the principal researcher who participated in the study, stated: “From the perspective of clinical diagnosis, the elderly who were taking zolpidem had a two-fold greater likelihood of having cognitive impairment than those who took placebo, indicating that sleeping pills existed. Major security risks."
