Researchers may use graphene as a filling material

Graphene (Graphene) is a two-dimensional crystal with only one layer of atomic thickness and is composed of carbon atoms and is peeled off from the graphite material. It is the thinnest material and the strongest material. Researchers from four institutions in Romania and St. Kitts recently collaborated on a project to determine whether graphene can be used to make more durable dental materials. They tested the toxicity of the teeth in different forms of this material and achieved gratifying results.

According to a 2011 study, an average meal needs to be chewed 800 times. Every year it takes at least 1 million times to chew, so the teeth will inevitably be damaged. Previously, dental amalgam and other materials are apt to rot and their hardness is not enough. On the contrary, graphene-made dental filling materials are quite durable. Graphene is the most powerful material in nature at present, and its breaking strength is 200 times higher than that of the best steel.

The researchers used graphene oxide, heat-conducting graphene oxide, and heterogenous graphene, three forms of graphene, to test on dental stem cells. The results showed that the latter two variants all caused damage to the cells, and they were both toxic and Causes membrane damage. Graphene oxide has the lowest toxicity and can be used as an ideal candidate for fillings.

Dr. Gabriela Adriana Filip of IuliuHatieganu Medical University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania stated: “The results are very interesting and prove that graphene is very suitable for being made into dental materials. We believe that this study will deepen the understanding of the cytotoxicity of graphene-based materials. And its potential for application in dental materials."
