The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics said on the 6th that the world's largest controlled star fusion device "Spiral Stone 7-X" has successfully completed the first round of experiments in March this year and is currently undergoing upgrading. It is expected that the target of plasma pulse duration of 30 minutes can be achieved after 4 years.
As the name suggests, the imitation star is an imitation of a star, a controlled nuclear fusion device. By design, the pseudo-stars constrain the nuclear hydrogen isotope æ°˜ and æ°š by mimicking the nuclear fusion reaction inside the star, and heat up to about 100 million degrees Celsius to undergo nuclear fusion to obtain continuous energy.
The "Spiral Stone 7-X" unit in Greifswald, northeastern Germany, began operation in December 2015 and ended its first round of experiments in March 2016, successfully producing helium and hydrogen plasma. At the same time, after more than 2,000 experiments, the duration of the hydrogen plasma pulse also reached 6 seconds from the first half second.
The researchers said that with a 4 MW microwave heating device, the temperature inside the plasma reactor rises rapidly, the electron temperature reaches 100 million degrees Celsius, and the ion temperature rises to 10 million degrees Celsius.
The researchers said that the first round of experimental results exceeded expectations and they were very satisfied with it. At present, the plasma reactor is being upgraded and is expected to be completed in mid-2017. At that time, the "spiral stone 7-X" is expected to withstand higher temperatures and maintain the plasma pulse for 10 seconds. According to the plan, after several upgrades, the plasma pulse can be achieved for about 30 minutes in about 4 years.
"Spiral Stone 7-X" was built by the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Germany. The project invested more than 1 billion euros and the assembly of equipment, which took 9 years, was not completed until 2014.
Controlled nuclear fusion is one of the solutions to future energy problems. However, the difficulty in applying nuclear fusion is to make the ultra-high temperature plasma "controlled", otherwise it may become a hydrogen bomb explosion. The imitation star is one of the more promising types of controlled nuclear fusion devices. China and the United States are still studying other types of controlled nuclear fusion devices such as tokamak.
