Ultra-sturdy polylactic acid material: reactive blending with ethylene copolymer

Polylactic acid is a well-known biocompatible, bioabsorbable and biodegradable polymer that is superior to petrochemicals. Because of its natural resources, total energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions during the life cycle are less.


However, the brittleness of PLa is a major weakness, which limits its scope of use. Although many studies on the modification of polylactic acid have been carried out, the results obtained are limited. The research conducted in this paper can significantly improve the mechanical properties of PLA by blending with ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (EGMa).


It shows that the interfacial reaction between the polymer components can help to form a super-sturdy polylactic acid material that is superior to aBS resin. The highlight of this innovative material is the importance of interface control in the preparation of multi-component materials.
