Two research teams from North Carolina State University and the University of Qatar have recently developed a high-entropy metal alloy with a higher weight-to-weight ratio than the existing metal materials. High-entropy alloys are materials made up of five or more metals in nearly equal amounts. High-entropy alloys are widely used in materials science and engineering. The research team successfully combined lithium, magnesium, titanium, aluminum and bismuth to prepare nano-crystallite high-entropy alloy, which has the advantages of low density and high strength.
Professor Carl Koch of North Carolina State University said: This nano-crystallite high-entropy alloy has the same density as aluminum, but its strength is higher than that of titanium. It has the characteristics of low density and high strength, which is unmatched by Other metal materials. Its weight-to-weight ratio is comparable to that of some ceramics, but it is harder than brittle ceramics.
There is still a lot of work to be done on the preparation of this new type of nanocrystalline high entropy alloy, one of which is the cost of 20% of expensive tantalum raw materials. Since some materials (lithium and magnesium) require a higher vapor pressure, the experiment uses a mechanical alloying method instead of the melting and casting method, and finally can produce up to 99% of the metal powder of the village committee.
The alloy powder prepared by the mechanical alloying method has less nitrogen and oxygen impurities and has a single-phase face-centered cubic lattice structure characteristic. The particle size of the nanocrystallite can be calculated by the Scherrer formula to be about 12 nm.
