Academician Pan Ji of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology said that the magnetic phenomenon is one of the basic phenomena of matter. When the substance is in a magnetic field, its internal structure may change and produce new results. Strong magnetic fields, like cryogenic and ultra-high pressure, are listed as one of the most important extreme conditions in modern scientific experiments. It can be divided into two categories: steady-state strong magnetic field and pulsed strong magnetic field. The corresponding generating devices are divided into steady-state strong magnetic field devices and pulsed strong magnetic field devices.

According to statistics, 19 of the world’s achievements related to strong magnetic fields have won the Nobel Prize since 1913, including one medical award, five chemical awards, and 13 physics awards. In the past 30 years alone, 8 related achievements have won Nobel Prizes, such as Quantum Hall Effect, Fractional Quantum Hall Effect, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

In 2008, Huazhong University of Science and Technology was allowed to start preparations for the establishment of the National Center for Pulsed Magnetic Field Science. In November 2011, Huazhong University of Science and Technology relied on the National Center for Pulsed Magnetic Field Science developed by the university, and its own domestic first dual-coil pulsed magnet successfully achieved a magnetic field strength of 83 Tesla and refreshed the Chinese pulsed magnetic field strength record. China’s non-destructive magnetic field strength ranks third in the world and first in Asia.

According to Professor Li Liang, the director of the National Pulse High Magnetic Field Science Center, the complete set of magnets, power supplies, and control systems that produced a magnetic field strength of 90.6 Tesla was independently developed by the center. The PMDS pulsed magnet special design software developed by them has now been selected as a special magnet design tool by major pulse magnetic field laboratories in Europe and the United States; the manufacturing cost of its magnets is also not one-tenth that of comparable magnets in the United States and Germany.

It is understood that in order to achieve a magnetic field strength of 90 Tesla or more, the strong magnetic field laboratory of Los Alamos in the United States took 20 years, and the strong magnetic field laboratory in Dresden, Germany, took 10 years.
