Interview: Antu bathroom designer Matteo Thun

Home bathroom trends have arisen mainly in hotels, which is best reflected in the fact that bathrooms are becoming an integral part of the bedroom or living space. In addition, the development of washbasins and washbasins also originated in hotel bathrooms. Designers and architects are constantly exploring various amazing design and interior design ideas in various ways. Among them, Matteo Thun, an internationally acclaimed designer and architect from South Tyrol, Italy, has a unique design style—focusing on environmental protection, simple structure, and keeping raw materials unadorned. This is the design concept of Duravit bathroom series, namely, personality, simplicity, innovation and environmental protection.

In this interview about the hotel bathroom, Matteo Thun detailed the important ideas for him.

1. The name Matteo Thun always stands for green building, sustainable design, and building materials in harmony with nature. Are you also adhering to these characteristics in the design of hotel and hotel bathrooms?

Our design works are based on aesthetics, economics and technological sustainability. The same is true for construction projects. Sustainable design is particularly important for hotel projects - the goal is to keep costs within a certain range. We believe that the economic significance of the project is equally important. A project must be able to ensure a service life of 10 to 15 years, because no investor is willing to renovate once every five years. Whether as an architect or an investor, I have a moral obligation.

2. Please tell us in detail about your proposed "Three Zeros" concept.

Creating durable solutions through an integrated approach is our architectural and design philosophy. We want to avoid designing ugly buildings, using the right materials in the right places, and designing appropriate structures within the prescribed building areas. This means that we have to grasp the soul of every environment and every brand, and combine existing and planned uses with the environment or materials. The "three zeros" concept is our guiding principle, namely zero import, zero carbon dioxide emissions and zero waste. This means that we need to use local materials that do not exceed the 24-hour transportation distance from the construction site, and achieve zero CO2 emissions and zero waste.

3. As one of the founders of the Klima Hotel certification established in 2009, what standards do you think a hotel must meet in order to be awarded this high quality hotel?

KlimaHotel is a quality certification for sustainable hotel construction. To meet the need to create an international standard for environmentally friendly, climate-friendly hotels, this certification came into being. The KlimaHotel certification ensures that the hotel has the highest quality of service and ensures that the hotel is a safe, profitable and stable investment from an economic, ecological, social and cultural perspective. A hotel certified by Klima Hotel needs to provide guests with other quality guarantees - a truly quality living experience: it is not just meeting some of the quality standards for energy consumption, but the overall concept of the hotel as a whole.

Ensure respect for nature - all building materials are taken directly from the area near the construction site, taking into account regional, cultural and economic factors, and the hotel menu is based on local natural cuisine.

4. Not only did you design a small boutique hotel, such as the Side Hotel in Hamburg, Germany as "2001 Best Hotel", but also designed many large chain hotels such as Intercontinental, Steigenberger, Mövenpick, Radisson and Penta Hotel. In designing these large-scale projects, have you consistently adhered to the concept of "green building"?

This depends to a large extent on the actual location of the hotel. Is it a city hotel? Is it a mountain or beach hotel? Or airport hotel? The location of the hotel, the climate of the local area and the characteristics of the surrounding environment are of great importance to us.

However, my enthusiasm for the hotel stems from the fact that it can be designed as a whole, from the architectural structure and interior decoration, landscape and furniture design to lighting design. In Italy, this is called the "from spoon to the city" design. My two idols, Castiglioni and Ettore Sottsass, pioneered this design. This design concept can be applied not only to luxury business hotels but also to "zero-star" hotels. Applying this design can improve quality, reduce costs, and make guests feel comfortable.

5. In addition to wood, what material do you prefer?

I like natural, unprocessed materials such as wood and natural stone. I focus on personalization rather than high technology. Natural materials add to the comfort of people. This is not only because natural materials can enhance the natural atmosphere of interior decoration, but also give us a comfortable tactile sensation – let us become more aware of the environment and ourselves and change the way we feel and behave. In our designed bathroom, there is no high-gloss surface, high-gloss marble, or any polished stone. We follow a simple principle: The material used has a natural crack or split surface and is only sandblasted and waxed.

6. Your preference for stone is also reflected in the Antu bathroom series designed for Duravit. What is your reason for this cooperation with Duravit? What do you feel about working with Duravit?

For many years, Duravit has been known for its exquisite craftsmanship, innovative technology and high-quality design. At the beginning of the cooperation negotiations of the Ontu Sanitary Ware series, we realized that Duravit shares the same philosophy and aesthetic viewpoint with us in many aspects, and this is a precondition for the ideal of successful cooperation. Against this background, with the courage to continue to find new solutions, Duravit will undoubtedly become our best partner.

7. What is Ontu's design philosophy?

The main design concept of "Ontu" is simplicity, lightness, speed and longevity. The series has an excellent price/performance ratio and provides ample room for personalization. This new bathroom range is ideal for hotel bathrooms and it can be easily and quickly installed in private bathrooms.

8. Which product do you prefer in the Ondô series? Or do you like all the products in the entire series?

All of Ondun's products are highly favored - especially because of its cost-effectiveness!

9. Do you think that the bathroom in today's hotel has been given a new meaning?

For the hotel, the focus is always on the bathroom or not just on the luxurious bathroom. However, this view of the hotel's luxury bathroom is in fact a glimpse. The hotel bathroom did not become more spacious, but still only occupied a small space. If you want to connect the bathroom to the living room or bedroom, you only need to remove the partition. Taking into account the hygienic factors, the toilet must be placed in a separate space. This design has been successfully applied to the Side Hotel in Hamburg, Germany, the Nhow Hotel in Milan, Italy, and the apartment building in Katschberg, Austria.

10. Did the development of this concept significantly change the guest's experience in the hotel?

The main concern of the guests is the spacious shower space - this concept I have just mentioned, that is, providing a more spacious shower space!

11. What are the key criteria for the success or failure of hotel bathroom design and decoration?

When designing a bathroom, the most important factor is the comfort of water and bathing. This does not actually mean the use of more water but rather the design of a dynamic element. For this reason, we avoid using right angles or edges. You can walk naked and naturally naked. Hygiene and cleansing are of vital importance, so we have no longer used tiles since more than 25 years ago. In addition, lighting is another very important factor - every bathroom should use natural light - that is, indirect light source.

12. Hotel bathrooms lead the trend. What kind of trends are you expecting in the hotel bathroom in the next few years? How will it develop?

The trend of high-tech will be in a more and more important position - and low-tech and personalization will become the current trend of the times.

13. This shows how the private bathroom will develop?

Home bathroom will increasingly integrate with the living space, but the bathroom design will gradually fade out - the bathroom will pay more attention to show personality and use more wood elements.

14. The last question: If you were to build your own hotel, what would you design? Where is it built? What to attract guests?

My own hotel may be made of wood and located in the most central part of nature - such as the Vigilius Mountain Resort in South Tyrol, Italy. Of course, the hotel needs to obtain the KlimaHotel certification. However, fortunately, I am currently working on a similar project: the hotel we are currently designing is located by the Moselle River - each guest of this hotel will enjoy a 30-m2 garden with various species in the garden. Fruits, flowers and vegetables. During their stay at the hotel, guests can plant their own and taste the results of the planting. Therefore, in the ripening season of strawberries, they can pick their own fresh vegetables in the garden.
