Research progress on hydrogen production from electrolyzed water at Dalian Chemical Institute

Recently, a new generation of electrolyzed water catalyst developed by a team led by the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Key Laboratory of Fundamentals of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, and the researcher of the Solar Energy Research Department, Li Can Li (Suzhou) Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has achieved stable operation on the large-scale alkaline electrolysis water hydrogen production pilot demonstration project equipment. After long-term operation verification under rated working conditions, when the current density of electrolyzed hydrogen production is stable at 4000A / m2, the unit hydrogen production energy consumption is less than 4.1kWh / m3H2, and the energy efficiency value is greater than 86%; the current density is stable at 3000A / At m2, the energy consumption per unit of hydrogen production is less than 4.0kWh / m3H2, and the energy efficiency value is about 88%. This is currently known as the highest efficiency of large-scale electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen.

The use of solar energy and other renewable energy sources to decompose water to produce hydrogen is the only way to achieve a green hydrogen energy economy and the future development direction of hydrogen sources for hydrogen fuel cells. The key step in the conversion and storage of solar energy and other renewable energy into chemical energy is the process of water decomposition (photolysis and electrolysis of water). Among them, the hydrogen production technology of electrolyzed water is relatively mature and has been applied industrially. However, the energy conversion efficiency of hydrogen production from electrolyzed water has been hovering between 50-70% for a long time, which is one of the main reasons for the high cost of electrolyzed water. The progress of the project will have important scientific and practical significance for the development of the hydrogen energy field and the realization of the hydrogen energy economy.

The new-generation electrocatalyst developed by the team will be assembled in a 1,000-cubic-hour / hour electrolyzed water-to-hydrogen plant and applied to a 1,000-ton solar fuel industrialization demonstration project in Lanzhou New District. More than 15% will increase the energy efficiency of the electrolyzed water-to-hydrogen industry, significantly reduce costs, and promote the realization of large-scale electrolyzed water industrialization.
